SOME OF OUR SERVICES

In 2005, the Ontario Government implemented the Ontario Government’s Accessibility for Ontarians with a Disability Act. This act, which is commonly referred to by its acronym, AODA, is a legal requirement for Ontario based companies.

You must submit an accessibility compliance report if you are:

  • a business or non-profit organization with 20 or more employees

  • a public-sector organization

The compliance report confirms that you have met your current accessibility requirements under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). If you don’t complete your accessibility compliance report, you could face enforcement which can include financial penalties.

The requirements and deadlines you need to follow depend on the type and size of your organization:

  • businesses or non-profits

  • public sector organizations

  • municipalities

  • educational institutions (for example, boards, colleges, universities and schools

  • producers of educational material (for example, textbooks)

  • library boards

Part of AODA Compliancy revolves around your website.

The AODA is based on WCAG 2.0 is an internationally accepted standard for web accessibility developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) an international team of experts.

The provincial government offers tips for testing websites for accessibility, which includes

1. Automatic assessment and assistive technology

Do a final evaluation of your site using an automatic assessment to flag any issues that may not have been resolved. For example, you can review your site using assistive technology such as a screen reader to make sure the design and technical aspects of the site are accessible.

2. User testing and feedback

If possible, ask people with disabilities to test your new or refreshed site before you launch. Get feedback from customers and other site users to find out if there are any improvements needed.

3. Review key milestones and changes

Keep a record of the accessibility issues that have been repaired, or ask your web developer to maintain such a record. This will show you the completed work and the new level of accessibility. It will also be helpful if your organization is asked to show that your website is WCAG 2.0 compliant.

4. Online accessibility checker

You can use an online tool to check if your website is accessible. Using an online accessibility checker does not guarantee that you will find all accessibility issues with your website. It is important to have a person review the site as well.

This is an example of an online accessibility checker that can help you find accessibility issues with your new or refreshed website: www.achecker.ca

We’ll work with you to ensure your site is compliant.

An efficient SEO approach makes use of two primary elements, which optimize content across the entire customer journey:

Technical SEO

In a nutshell, technical SEO refers to the effectiveness of the content being crawled and indexed. It’s comprised of:

  • Crawl — The ability for a search engine to explore your site.
  • Index — The index-ability of relevant pages on your site.
  • Mobile — Your site’s ability to adapt for mobile users.
  • Speed — Fast page load times are critical
  • Tech — Kentico, our proposed CMS, is absolutely SEO friendly.
  • Hierarchy — The structure of your site’s content.

Content

SEO friendly content includes the following:

  • Keyword research — Understand the language of your target audience.
  • Descriptive URLs — Ensure each URL is simple and descriptive.
  • Page titles — Use keywords naturally within the page title.
  • Meta descriptions — Craft meta descriptions like they were ad copy to drive clicks.
  • Content optimization — Sensibly use keywords and variations in your page copy.
  • Good user experience (UX) — Ensure your site is a joy to use and navigate.
  • Strong calls to action — Make it easy for your users to perform predetermined actions,
  • Structured data markup — Tap into the latest SERP features to improve click-through rates.

Two additional items should be considered and discussed:

On-site SEO: The optimization of your HTML
Off-site SEO: Building authority and a solid linking strategy

Our preferred CMS, Kentico, helps ensure your site is SEO ready.  It also offers such features as 301 redirects, etc., which will help protect your existing traffic.

We will build your site with SEO in mind.  Elements such as page content, H1 tags, breadcrumb trails and the like will be included.

Kentico further allows us to optimize elements which enhance SEO, including:

  • Editing the metadata of pages (page titles and page descriptions).
  • Google sitemap URL
  • Google sitemap path
  • Robots.txt path
  • Allow permanent (301) redirection
  • Move ViewState to the end of the page
  • Use NOFOLLOW for user links
  • Default replacement page

Additionally, Kentico allows us to configure URL rewriting that focuses on avoiding issues with duplicate content, i.e. having the same content available under multiple URLs. Such problems can have a negative effect on search ranking, so it is recommended to set up a unified URL format.  Including:

  • Use URLs with trailing slash
  • Redirect page aliases to main URL
  • Redirect invalid case URLs to their correct versions
  • Redirect pages to main extension
  • Process domain prefix
  • Default page

In a nutshell, we want your site to perform better in Google.  We believe we can make your site appear relatively well in Google without having to pay for Adwords.
